Protez Pharmaceuticals is a privately held company founded in 2003 with the mission to discover, develop and commercialize novel antibiotics for the hospital market. The Company is leveraging its portfolio and world class expertise in antiinfective discovery and development to advance internal programs, to in-license an additional advanced stage asset, and to drive strategic discovery alliances.  Focus on the hospital market affords Protez the opportunity to commercialize products, while applications for the community will be partnered.  Key program areas for Protez include a breakthrough broad spectrum carbapenem and two combination strategies for product line extensions of multiple established antibiotics.

  • Philadelphia-based pharmaceutical company, with corporate headquarters and laboratories in Malvern Pennsylvania.

  • Founded in 2003 by Drs. Klaus Esser and Luigi Xerri, Mr. Chris Cashman, and BTG.

  • Operations initiated 22 December 2003, with seed funding from BTG, and with the acquisition of three antibiotic programs and IP from Influx Inc., Chicago.

  • Acquisition of advanced stage asset in May 2005 with the in-licensing from Dainippon Sumitomo Pharmaceuticals of PZ-601 (previously SMP-216601), a unique broad spectrum antibiotic. 

  • Funding of $23M in venture capital, plus $3.3M in NIH grants to include a major biodefense grant.

  • Competitive advantage comes from combining an experienced management team expert in antiinfectives, drug discovery, development, and commercialization, with antibiotic candidates already shown to have antibacterial activity meeting critical medical needs.
